Gender bias: ethical implications of an empirical finding.

ShareShare ?ShareEmail ?PrintPrint

By now, you may have seen the recently published study by Ross-Macusin et al. in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences entitled ?Science faculty?s subtle gender biases favor male students?, or the nice discussion by Ilana Yurkiewicz of why these findings matter.

Briefly, the study involved having science faculty from research-focused universities rate materials from potential student candidates for a lab manager position. The researchers attached names to the application materials ? some of them male names, some of them female names ? at random, and examined how the ratings of the materials correlated with the names that were attached to them. What they found was that the same application materials got a higher ranking (i.e., a judgment that the applicant would be more qualified for the job) when the attached name was male than when it was female. Moreover, both male and female faculty ranked the same application more highly when attached to a male name.

It strikes me that there are some ethical implications that flow from this study to which scientists (among others) should attend:

  1. Confidence that your judgments are objective is not a guarantee that your judgments are objective, and your intent to be unbiased may not be enough. The results of this study show a pattern of difference in ratings for which the only plausible explanation is the presence of a male name or a female name for the applicant. The faculty members treated the task they were doing as an objective evaluation of candidates based on prior research experience, faculty recommendations, the applicant?s statement, GRE scores, and so forth ? that they were sorting out the well-qualified from the less-well-qualified ? but they didn?t do that sorting solely on the basis of the actual experience and qualifications described in the application materials. If they had, the rankings wouldn?t have displayed the gendered split they did. The faculty in the study undoubtedly did not mean to bring gender bias to the evaluative task, but the results show that they did, whether they intended to or not.
  2. If you want to build reliable knowledge about the world, it?s helpful to identify your biases so they don?t end up getting mistaken for objective findings. As I?ve mentioned before, objectivity is hard. One of the hardest things about being objective is that fact that so many of our biases are unconscious ? we don?t realize that we have them. If you don?t realize that you have a bias, it?s much harder to keep that bias from creeping in to your knowledge-building, from the way you frame the question you?re exploring to how you interpret data and draw conclusions from them. The biases you know about are easier to keep on a short leash.
  3. If a methodologically sound study finds that science faculty have a particular kind of bias, and if you are science faculty, you probably should assume that you might also have that bias. If you happen to have good independent evidence that you do not display the particular bias in question, that?s great ? one less unconscious bias that might be messing with your objectivity. However, in the absence of such good independent evidence, the safest assumption to make is that you?re vulnerable to the bias too ? even if you don?t feel like you are.
  4. If you doubt the methodologically soundness of a study finding that science faculty have a particular kind of bias, it is your responsibility to identify the methodological flaws. Ideally, you?d also want to communicate with the authors of the study, and with other researchers in the field, about the flaws you?ve identified in the study methodology. This is how scientific communities work together to build a reliable body of knowledge we all can use. And, a responsible scientist doesn?t reject the conclusions of a study just because they don?t match one?s hunches about how things are. The evidence is how scientists know anything.
  5. If there?s reason to believe you have a particular kind of bias, there?s reason to examine what kinds of judgments of yours it might influence beyond the narrow scope of the experimental study. Could gender bias influence whose data in your lab you trust the most? Which researchers in your field you take most seriously? Which theories or discoveries are taken to be important, and which others are taken to be not-so-important? If so, you have to be honest with yourself and recognize the potential for this bias to interfere with your interaction with the phenomena, and with your interaction with other scientists to tackle scientific questions and build knowledge. If you?re committed to building reliable knowledge, you need to find ways to expose the operation of this bias, or to counteract its effects. (Also, to the extent that this bias might play a role in the distribution of rewards like jobs or grants in scientific careers, being honest with yourself probably means acknowledging that the scientific community does not operate as a perfect meritocracy.)

Each of these acknowledgments looks small on its own, but I will not pretend that that makes them easy. I trust that this won?t be a deal-breaker. Scientists do lots of hard things, and people committed to building reliable knowledge about the world should be ready to take on pieces of self-knowledge relevant to that knowledge-building. Even when they hurt.

MintLife Blog | Personal Finance News & Advice | Persistence Pays ...

persistence

Persistence pays.

I know, because I?ve seen consumers whose requests were either so unreasonable or so petty, that I dismissed them without a second thought. I told them there was no hope.

But they ignored me, pressed their cases?and won.

When you have a problem with a company, you can use persistence as a tool to bludgeon your opponent ? normally an intransigent offshore call center or ?help desk? ? into submission.

But there?s a right way to do it.

Here are a few secrets I?ve picked up along the way.

Be polite.

Good manners are your deadliest weapon. The complaint-resolution process is often designed to not only frustrate you, but to make you walk away in disgust.

Always be polite and they won?t have an excuse to hang up on you or to stop responding to your emails.

And yes, this is true even when your case is totally frivolous.

Drip, drip, drip.

Few consumer complaints are resolved in real time (although when they are ? that?s a beautiful thing!).

Use any of the popular calendaring programs to send you a regular reminder to check in with a company.

Your impeccably cordial follow-up emails will be the proverbial squeaky wheel that gets the job done.

Climb the appeals ladder.

If you don?t get a speedy resolution from the main ?1-800? number or from the ?Contact Us? page, take it to the next level.

Finding the email address of a customer service manager, a VP, or even the chief executive, isn?t difficult. They should hear from you, too.

Slow and steady.

Many disaffected customers try to email the CEO directly in hopes of a quick resolution.

But without a paper trail ? the back-and-forth between you and the ?Contact Us? page or a manager ? it will just get bounced back to the ?customer service? department.

Don?t take it personally.

You?ll get lots of ?nos? along the way and you?ll read a lot of form letters.

You?ll even hear representatives tell you by phone, in person, and by website ?chat? that they can?t help you anymore.

It?s not you; it?s them. They can help you. They just don?t want to. But they will.

Ascribe the best motives.

Project positive. ?I know how much you believe in customer satisfaction, so I?m sure you?ll want an opportunity to make this right.?

Expressing this can-do attitude is a self-fulfilling prophecy. Doing it over, and over, and over, often leaves a company with no choice but to comply.

Hunker down.

A few numbers to remember:

2 to 4 ? that?s the number of weeks it takes for the typical complaint to be resolved.

60 ? That?s the number of days you have to dispute a credit card charge.

Be extra nice for the first two weeks, insistent for the next two, and spend the following four weeks using these techniques as a battering ram to get what you want.

(If it looks like the company won?t play ball and is trying to run down the clock until its two months are up, use the last two weeks of the 60 days to file a dispute with your bank.)

Finding good customer service shouldn?t be a chore, but when it becomes one, it?s the right combination of patience, politeness and persistence that will get you what you deserve.

Victim 1 in Jerry Sandusky trial to reveal his identity

NEW YORK (AP) ? A key witness against convicted child molester and former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, known in court papers as Victim 1, has a book deal and will soon reveal his identity, a publisher announced Thursday.

Ballantine Bantam Dell said that "Silent No More: Victim (hash)1's Fight for Justice Against Jerry Sandusky," is coming out Oct. 23. The memoir will be co-written by the victim's mother and psychologist and "will share how he survived years of shame and secrecy, harassment and accusation, before reporting Sandusky's actions to the authorities, and will offer a hopeful and inspiring message for victims of abuse," Ballantine announced.

Victim 1, now 18, will reveal his identity on the day of the book's release in an interview with ABC's Chris Cuomo.

Financial terms for the book were not disclosed. But Ballantine, an imprint of Random House Inc., plans a donation to a charity for victims of child abuse.

Victim 1 first alerted authorities in 2008 and helped launch the investigation leading to Sandusky's conviction in June on 45 counts of child sexual abuse. Prosecutors said some of the assaults took place on the Penn State campus. Sandusky is scheduled to be sentenced next month and is likely to receive a sentence that will keep him in prison for life.

Victim 1 testified for the prosecution that Sandusky approached him through a summer camp for youth sponsored by The Second Mile, a charity for at-risk youth that the former coach had founded. Their initial contacts consisted of football games and swimming, and Sandusky would attend the boy's wrestling tournaments.

Physical contact began with a hand on his leg in the car, Victim 1 said, and he began spending nights at the Sandusky home in State College, about 30 miles from his own home in Lock Haven.

Kissing and back rubbing during those overnight visits, when he was in his early teens, progressed to oral sex, he testified, sobbing. He said Sandusky eventually told him: "It's your turn."

"I don't how to explain it, I froze," he said. "My mind is telling me to move but I couldn't do it, I couldn't move."

He told jurors his own behavior worsened, going from a well-behaved child to fights with relatives and bed wetting. His grades deteriorated. After Victim 1 began trying to avoid Sandusky, he asked his mother about websites for child molesters, "to see if Jerry was on there," he testified.

His mother set up a meeting with school guidance counselors, a process that led to the opening of a police investigation and produced criminal charges against Sandusky in November. Messages seeking comment left Thursday for Victim 1's civil lawyers, Slade McLaughlin and Michael Boni, were not immediately returned.

(AP) ? There was a time when a Vatican trial could end with a heretic being burned at the stake. Paolo Gabriele doesn't risk nearly as a dire fate, but he and the Holy See face a very public airing over the gravest security breach in the Vatican's recent history following the theft and leaking of the pope's personal papers.

Gabriele, the pope's once-trusted butler, goes on trial Saturday, accused of stealing the pope's documents and passing them off to a journalist ? a sensational, Hollywood-like scandal that exposed power struggles, intrigue and allegations of corruption in the highest levels of the Catholic Church.

Gabriele is charged with aggravated theft and faces six years in prison if convicted by the three-judge Vatican tribunal. He has already confessed and asked to be pardoned ? something most Vatican watchers say is a given if he is convicted ? making the trial almost a formality.

To be sure, trials are nothing new at the Vatican: In 2011 alone, 640 civil cases and 226 penal cases were processed by the Vatican's judiciary, 99 percent of which involved some of the 18 million tourists who pass through the Vatican Museums and St. Peter's Basilica each year. And that's not counting the marriage annulments, clerical sex abuse cases and other church law matters that come before the Vatican's ecclesial courts.

Yet this most high-profile case will cast an unusually bright spotlight on the Vatican's legal system, which is based on the 19th century Italian criminal code, and the rather unique situation in which the pope is both the victim and supreme judge in this case.

The Vatican is an elective absolute monarchy: The pope has full executive, legislative and judicial authority in the Vatican city state. He delegates that power through executive appointments, legislative commissions and tribunals, but by law he can intervene at any point in a judicial proceeding.

The Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, has said he believes the trial will run its course without papal interference. But he has acknowledged the likelihood of a papal pardon.

Gabriele was arrested May 24 after Vatican police found what prosecutors called an "enormous" stash of documents from the pope's desk in his Vatican City apartment. Many of those documents appeared in the book "His Holiness: Pope Benedict XVI's secret papers," by Gianluigi Nuzzi, an Italian journalist whose earlier book on the Vatican bank caused a sensation.

Three days before the arrest, the pope's secretary convened a meeting of the handful of people who make up the "papal family" ? the pope's two secretaries, four housekeepers, a longtime aide and the butler Gabriele ? and asked if any of them had leaked the papers. Gabriel firmly denied it at the time, prosecutors said.

Gabriele later confessed to passing the documents off to Nuzzi, hoping to expose what he considered the "evil and corruption" in the church, according to prosecutors. They described Gabriele as a devout but misguided would-be whistle-blower who believed the Holy Spirit had inspired him to protect and inform the pope about the problems around him.

"I was sure that a shock, even a media one, would have been healthy to bring the Church back on the right track," prosecutors quoted Gabriele as saying during a June interrogation.

Gabriele is being tried along with a co-defendant, Claudio Sciarpelletti, a computer expert in the Secretariat of State who is charged with aiding and abetting Gabriele.

While the Vatican legal system will be on display during the trial, so too will be the peculiarities of the Vatican city state itself, the world's smallest sovereign state. Gabriele is both a Vatican citizen and resident of a Vatican City apartment (one of 595 citizens of whom 247 are residents). So the pope is not only Gabriele's former boss, he is also his landlord, his spiritual head as the leader of the Roman Catholic Church and his head of state, not to mention the authority who appointed the prosecutor and the three lay judges who will hear Gabriele's case.

When it was first published in May, "His Holiness" became the most-talked about book in Italy and the Vatican, 273 pages of secrets about one of the most secretive institutions in the world. It included letters from a Vatican official detailing corruption in the awarding of Vatican contracts, finger-pointing about who was to blame for leaking accusations about homosexual liaisons, and the like.

None of the documents threatened the papacy. Most were of interest only to Italians, as they concerned relations between Italy and the Vatican and a few local scandals and personalities. But their very existence and the fact that they were taken from the pope's own desk provoked an unprecedented reaction from the Vatican, with the pope naming a commission of cardinals to investigate alongside the Vatican magistrates.

Clerics have since lamented how the episode shattered the trust and discretion that characterize day-to-day life in the Vatican, with bishops now questioning whether to send confidential information to the pope for fear it may end up on the front page of a newspaper.

Journalist Nuzzi, for his part, remains calm despite his role as the other key protagonist in the case.

"The only thing I can say is that I strongly hope that the trial will unveil the motives and convictions that compelled Paolo Gabriele to bring to light documents and events described in the book," he told The Associated Press this week.

Gabriele, a 46-year-old father of three, is being represented by attorney Cristiana Arru after his childhood friend, Carlo Fusco, quit as his lead attorney last month over differences in defense strategy.

The Vatican had said the trial would be open to the public, though access is limited and no cameras or audio is allowed. Eight journalists will attend each session and brief the Vatican press corps afterward.

There is no indication how long the trial will last, how many witnesses will be called or what Gabriele's defense will be given that he has, according to prosecutors, confessed to taking the documents. One tantalizing potential witness is the pope's personal secretary, Monsignor Georg Gaenswein, one of the few named witnesses in the indictment who first confronted Gabriele.

Prosecutors did order a psychiatric evaluation and determined that Gabriele was conscious of his actions, although they quoted the psychiatrists as saying he was unsuited for his job, was easily manipulated and suffered from "a grave psychological unease characterized by restlessness, tension, anger and frustrations."

Despite the peculiarities of the Vatican's legal system and the pope's absolute authority over all things legislative, executive and judicial, at least one outside authority has deemed it credible and fair: A federal judge in New York last year dismissed a lawsuit against the Vatican concerning rights to reproduce images from the Vatican library, ruling that the plaintiffs failed to show they couldn't get a fair hearing in the Vatican courts.

There has been no such vote of confidence for the Vatican's onetime Congregation for the Holy Roman and Universal Inquisition, the commission created in 1542 that functioned as a tribunal to root out heresy, punish crimes against the faith and name Inquisitors for the church.

One of its more famous victims was Giordano Bruno, burned in Rome in 1600 after being tried for heresy.

(AP) ? Emmylou Harris loves Mumford & Sons for a special reason.

"They're making the banjo respectable, which is not an easy feat, and I'm so glad it's finally happening," Harris joked.

Harris, an iconic singer and member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, and Mumford & Sons, platinum-selling lads from London who have sparked a folk rock resurgence, are joining together to explore their shared love of high harmony, sad songs and, yes, the oft-belittled banjo on an episode of "CMT Crossroads" on Thursday night.

The Nashville-based Harris had only briefly met lead singer Marcus Mumford before agreeing to do the show based on the waves they created in the music world. They coordinated song choices by phone and got together to rehearse for a little more than a day before recording the show earlier this month.

It was a crash course in catalog consumption and the chance to get to know each other.

"They're great harmony (singers) and they've got this great driving groove with a minimalist instrumentation," Harris said. "But they just sound good and the songs have beautiful melodies and I love harmonizing on them."

She said it proves her theory that music is going to keep reinventing itself in good ways.

"You don't have to repeat the past. We learn from the past, but we have to come forward with something different and there are just so many different combinations to make good music that touches people," she said.

Harris, 65, was among the gateway artists who helped Mumford and bandmates Ben Lovett, Ted Dwane and Winston Marshall discover their love for American roots music. It started with the "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" soundtrack. Harris appeared with Gillian Welch and Alison Krauss on the memorable song "Didn't Leave Nobody but the Baby." That eventually led them to the Old Crow Medicine Show and then deep immersion in old-timey sounds from America's long-neglected past.

They ran across Harris' imprint many times along the way, and with the help of dobro master Jerry Douglas, they help explore that legacy on the show.

"Pretty much every song that Emmylou has sung on is my favorite song of whichever artist she sang with," Mumford said. "I'm like an obsessive Emmylou Harris freak and I'm not ashamed."

In turn, the quartet has helped shine a light on the influence Harris and the extensive roots underground still exerts. The band, which releases their new album, "Babel," this week, were a growing success story in that community when they appeared on the 2011 Grammy Awards with Bob Dylan and the Avett Brothers, launching Mumford & Sons into the national popular consciousness. Their album "Sigh No More" is now double platinum and "Babel" is one of the year's most anticipated albums.

"For us, it's kind of a bit of a dream come true," Dwane said. "We'd never thought we'd get to travel so extensively, meet our heroes and collaborate with so many people. ... We're just having a really nice time."

Like the band, fans have discovered something new in those old sounds. Mumford & Sons routinely drew 10,000 and more fans on their Gentleman of the Road tour across the U.S. this summer, almost all of them dancing along to Marshall's banjo.

"Folk music has always been there, but it's wonderful to see the infusion of freshness and energy, but still having that passion," Harris said. "Not just mimicking what went before, but infusing it. I was joking about the banjo, but I'm serious."

"Walking Dead" Writer, Artist Settle Lawsuits

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - Robert Kirkman, author of "The Walking Dead" comics that inspired the hit AMC zombie series, has reached a settlement over payments for the work of their original artist, Tony Moore.

The two childhood friends said they had resolved to "move on in their lives."

Moore sued Kirkman in February, accusing Moore, a frequent comic collaborator, of tricking him into surrendering his rights to the early issues of "Walking Dead" in 2005 in exchange for payments that never came. Kirkman called the allegations "ridiculous," and in turn sued Moore.

The gritty, realistic series - well, realistic except for the walkers - became a huge success and inspired the massive cable drama. Its third season will premiere next month.

Kirkman had made a joke months before the lawsuit was filed that Moore's lawyer suggested could come back to haunt him if the case went to trial. In an interview for the Nerdist podcast, Kirkman was asked by an aspiring comic writer how to find an illustrator, and recommended, with tongue-in-cheek, "trickery and deceit."

When TheWrap brought the remark to the attention of Moore's lawyer, Devin McRae, McRae responded: "As the saying goes, in all humor there's truth. And also, I think from my client's perspective, Mr. Kirkman is clearly speaking from experience."

But the conflict is buried now.

"Robert Kirkman and Tony Moore are pleased to jointly announce that they have reached an amicable agreement in their respective lawsuits and all parties have settled the entire matter to everyone's mutual satisfaction," the said in a joint statement. "Neither side will be discussing any details but will instead happily and productively spend their time focused on their own work and move on in their lives."

(AP) ? Twin blasts targeting Syria's army command headquarters rocked the capital on Wednesday, setting off hours of sporadic gunbattles and a raging fire inside the heavily guarded compound, state-run media and witnesses said.

An army statement said no military commanders or personnel were hurt in the explosions, one of which was from a car bomb. But Iranian Press TV said one of its correspondents, 33-year-old Maya Nasser, a Syrian national, died in an exchange of fire in the area following the blasts.

The explosions were the latest to hit the Syrian capital as the country's civil war intensified and appeared to show the deep reach of the rebels determined to topple President Bashar Assad's regime.

Syria's state-run news agency, SANA, said the explosions struck just before 7 a.m. (0400 GMT) near the landmark Omayyad Square. They were heard several miles (kilometers) away and shattered the windows of the Dama Rose hotel and other nearby buildings.

The army command building was in flames, sending huge columns of thick black smoke that hung over Damascus for several hours following the blasts.

Witnesses said the explosions were followed by heavy gunfire that stretched on for hours at the Omayyad Square and around the military compound. One witness who managed to get close to the area, which was cordoned off, saw panicked soldiers shooting in the air randomly as they ran.

The witness, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals, said it appears that rebels may have been holed up inside the army command building, from where the sound of gunfire could clearly be heard.

The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which relies on a network of activists on the ground, said heavy clashes were taking place inside the compound of the army command, adding that there were casualties on both sides.

"The explosions shook the entire apartment and the windows shattered," said a resident of the nearby Abu Rummaneh district who spoke on condition of anonymity out of security concerns. "It was like a quake."

The army statement said the blasts were caused by a car bomb and an explosive device that went off near the army command buildings. It said "terrorists" in the area simultaneously opened fire randomly to terrorize people, adding that authorities were pursuing the gunmen. Syrian authorities regularly refer to rebels fighting to topple Assad's regime as terrorists.

The statement said a number of guards were wounded.

"I can confirm that all our comrades in the military command and defense ministry are fine," Information Minister Omran Zoubi told Syrian TV, which is located near the site of the explosion, in a telephone call.

"Everything is normal," he said. "There was a terrorist act, perhaps near a significant location, yes, this is true, but they failed as usual to achieve their goals."

Ambulances were rushed to the site as police sealed off the area to traffic and journalists. Traffic in other areas snarled as checkpoints were set up, blocking access to the capital from the suburbs.

Syria's unrest began in March 2011 when protests calling for political change met a violent government crackdown. Many in the opposition have since taken up arms as the conflict morphed into a civil war that activists say has killed nearly 30,000 people. Over the past few months, the rebels have increasingly targeted security sites and symbols of regime power in a bid to turn the tide in the fighting.

On July 18, rebels penetrated the heart of Syria's power elite, detonating a bomb inside a high-level crisis meeting in Damascus that killed three top regime officials, including Assad's brother-in-law and the defense minister. Other large blasts have targeted the headquarters of security agencies in the capital, killing scores of people this year.

On Tuesday, several bombs went off inside a Damascus school that activists said was being used by regime forces as a security headquarters. Several people were wounded.

Syria's conflict was the focus of attention as world leaders gathered at the U.N. General Assembly's annual meeting in New York this week.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon demanded international action to stop the war in Syria, telling a somber gathering of world leaders Tuesday that the 18-month conflict had become "a regional calamity with global ramifications."

Ban, declaring that the situation in Syria is getting worse every day, called the conflict a serious and growing threat to international peace and security that requires attention from the deeply divided U.N. Security Council.

That appears highly unlikely, however, at least in the near future.

Russia and China have vetoed three Western-backed resolutions aimed at pressuring Assad to end the violence and enter negotiations on a political transition, leaving the U.N.'s most powerful body paralyzed in what some diplomats say is the worst crisis since the U.S.-Soviet standoff during the Cold War.

In sharp contrast to the U.N. chief, President Barack Obama pledged U.S. support for Syrians trying to oust Assad ? "a dictator who massacres his own people."

On the other personally, there are times when animals have conditions that just don?t seem to interact with traditional veterinary treatment, as well as in these situations, complementary therapies can be hugely effective when used in conjunction with veterinary medicine. 8 Creative Wedding Proposal Ideas | Ready Flowers Blog

Proposing marriage is a monumental step; no matter how old a person may be, he or she may find the prospect exciting and daunting. If a person is ready to move into new territory, the ideas below may prove useful. If further assistance is still necessary, a person may wish to talk to a trusted loved one.

So if you?re ready to pop the question, here are some ideas:

1. Spell out The Proposal
It is a brilliant idea to spell out the marriage proposal. He or she may wish to write out the message with food; if this is not possible, he or she may write the message in lipstick, chalk, or similar items.

2. Hide the Ring in a Christmas Ornament
If a person celebrates Christmas, the ring may be integrated into the tree. The ring may be kept in the original box, or it may be placed in or around an ornament. It is necessary to remember the location of the ring; otherwise the moment of the proposal may involve stress and worry.

3. Create and Display a Series of Notes
If a person has scraps of paper around the home, he or she may wish to write down what is wonderful or charming about the loved one. The person may place the notes in noticeable places. The very last note should mention the marriage proposal.

4. Hide Ring in Box of Chocolates or Other Item
A box of chocolates is a suitable way to tell a person that he or she is important to another person. The proposer may wish to eat a chocolate and place the ring in the empty spot.

5. Purchase Movie Theatre Ad
It may be possible to purchase an ad at a movie theatre. This ad may play on the screen before the movie starts. It is vital to ensure that the loved one sees the message. A person may wish to bring along friends and family members to make the event more exciting. However, the importance of the event should not be obvious; a boyfriend or girlfriend may become suspicious.

6. Purchase a Newspaper Ad
If a person does not wish to go to a movie theatre, creative wedding proposals sometimes include placing an ad in the local newspaper. If the loved one enjoys a particular paper, a person may wish to contact the paper and ask for assistance.

7. Use Airplane Loudspeaker
If a person is going on a holiday with a boyfriend or girlfriend, he or she should consider proposing over the loudspeaker. People do not expect to be addressed over a speaker on an airplane; this ensures complete surprise.

8. Slip Ring on a Person While He or She Sleeps
You may slip the ring on the loved one?s finger while the loved one sleeps. When the person wakes up, he or she may immediately notice the new jewellery.

If a person genuinely loves somebody else, he or she may want to consider marriage. If a person seeks creative wedding proposals, the information above may prove useful. It is up to the person to choose the best option.

Report Warns of Trampoline Dangers

Jennifer Amaral, 31, of Wilmington, Mass., remembered the joys of owning her own trampoline as a teenager. Her daily after school routine was to jump for hours.

"Almost every house on our street had one," said Amaral. "I did read the cautions, but kids will be kids, and I really did not think there was a danger."

At age 18, Amaral found herself having to wear a leg cast after a wrong landing on a routine bounce.

"I fractured my right ankle jumping on a trampoline, not doing anything crazy, just jumping up and down" said Amaral, adding she was jumping by herself. "I came down on it sideways with my foot tucked in."

Amaral's injury healed after six weeks, but for many jumpers with more serious wrong landings, an injury can lead to paralysis, or even death.

An estimated 98,000 trampoline-related injuries occurred in 2009, resulting in 3,100 hospitalizations, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. Head and neck trauma account for 17 percent of injuries.

While the number of trampoline-related injuries has steadily decreased since 2004, the American Academy of Pediatrics reaffirmed its position Monday, advising against any recreational trampoline use.

This latest policy statement pulls away from previous reports, which regarded structured forms of trampoline use, such as competitive sports or for training, as risky as recreational uses.

Michelle Kwan Gives back after Going for Gold Watch Video

In most cases, safety measures taken to reduce injuries don't work, according to the policy report published Monday in the journal Pediatrics. Enclosed netting and padding have not been enough to significantly reduce the number of people who are getting hurt, the report concluded.

"There was a trend downward in the number of injuries, but it was the same time trampoline sales decreased," said Dr. Susannah Briskin, pediatric sports medicine specialist at University Hospitals in Cleveland and co-author of the paper. "So we don't think adding padding or knitting to the frame is protecting against any injuries."

Also, most injuries occur on the bouncy mat of the trampoline, not on the perimeter or by falling off of the trampoline, according to Dr. Michele LaBotz, executive committee member for the council on sports medicine and fitness for the American Academy of Pediatrics, and lead author of the policy statement.

Even adult supervision has not prevented injuries. Briskin said that in order for their presence to make a difference, adults needed to monitor how the trampoline was being used.

"We know that trampolines tend to be used in an inappropriate fashion recreationally," said Briskin. "So using them for stunts puts someone at greater risk."

Children under age 5 are at the highest risk for injury, especially when there are multiple jumpers. Almost 50 percent of injuries in kids less than 5 years old resulted in fracture or dislocation, not to mention the disastrous consequences of landing on your neck.

But a person at any age who chooses to hop on may be at risk, according to the report. Jumpers are 14 times more likely to get injured when there is more than one person on board.

Of particular concern, according to Briskin, are indoor trampoline parks, which have gained popularity in recent years.

"There is typically always more than one user in those instances," she said. "We have no data about the safety of these facilities."

Still, it's not known how much safer it is if there's only a single jumper, Briskin acknowledged.

Aptina unveils 1inch sensor with 120FPS 1080p video, we suspect Nikon wants 1

Part suppliers sometimes telegraph their customers' plans months in advance: when you're the only provider for a key piece of technology, it's not hard for others to read the tea leaves. Aptina might have just given us one such peek into the future by unveiling its 1-inch AR1011HS camera sensor this week. As the Nikon 1 series is one of the few current, mainstream camera lines to use Aptina's 1-inch sensors, it's quite possible that we're looking at a template for one or more of Nikon's tiny interchangeable-lens shooters. The 10-megapixel CMOS sensor and low-light sensitivity aren't surprises. We're more interested in the wild levels of video capture support -- the AR1011HS can record 1080p footage at 120 frames per second, oversample movies at that resolution or scale up to quad HD. There's no guarantee any or all of the features will make the cut, especially given a dearth of 4K TVs, but it's not hard to imagine Nikon playing to the 1's high-speed strengths with an even quicker upgrade. Mass production starts in the first quarter of 2013, and while neither Aptina nor Nikon has confirmed any plans, Aptina's emphasis on top-tier companies in the "performance-oriented" mirrorless camera world leaves few other choices for a partnership.
